Along with the 1855, the 1856 is my favorite “sleeper” date in the Philadelphia Type One double eagle series. It is scarce in properly graded AU55, especially with natural color and surfaces.
This is one of the most original circulated 1856 double eagles I have seen with very deep golden color which is contrasted by darker highlights from storage in a European vault. There are a few small abrasions in the left obverse field but this piece is clean and wholesome with really excellent overall eye appeal.
No PCGS AU55′s have been auctioned since March 2009. An NGC AU55 with CAC approval sold for $5,875 as Heritage 4/14: 6763.
A truly nice example of this scarce and popular date.
CAC has approved ten in this grade with just five finer.
