The 1868-S half eagle is moderately scarce in terms of its overall profile with 125-150 known. However, it is rare in the higher AU grades and there are only two known in Uncirculated, an NGC MS60 (which recently sold at auction for $23,500) and a PCGS MS61 which has been off the market since 1997 ( a second NGC MS61 is recolored and not Uncirculated, in my opinion).

This example has been off the market for a number of years and has never appeared for sale at auction. It is lustrous and lightly worn with natural rose and medium orange-gold color. The fields are a little bit scuffy but the only marks worth noting are a small cut on the edge of the coronet and some ticks below TRUST in the motto. This is the single nicest AU58 1868-S I can recall having seen.

The only other 1868-S half eagle in AU58 with CAC approval brought $5,463 as Heritage 1/12: 6377 and it was inferior to the present coin. An NGC MS60 recently sold for $23,500 as Heritage 3/14: 30323.

This is almost certainly well into the Condition Census for the issue and it represents an important coin for the advanced San Francisco half eagle specialist.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
