The unheralded 1850-D is actually one of the scarcer half eagles from this mint both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. It is not often seen in grades above EF45 to AU50 and almost never with natural color and choice surfaces.
This choice example shows pleasing medium amber and russet colors over clean, lightly marked surfaces. As on nearly all 1850-D half eagles, the mintmark is not sharp but it is clear to the naked eye and not a “Weak D.”
In looking through my records, it has been nearly two years since I’ve handled a comparable 1850-D half eagle.
Ex Heritage 10/13: 26434 where it realized $2,644.
