Variety 5-D, Small Mintmark as attributed by PCGS.

This early date Dahlonega half eagle is more available in higher grades than the 1840-D and 1842-D but it is still rare with 10-12 known in Uncirculated. Many of the choicer pieces are either off the market in tightly held collections or they have been stripped-n-dipped leaving them with unsatisfactory eye appeal despite their plastic.

This example is one of the single nicest D mint half eagles which I have handled in some time. It is well struck and frosty with distinguished rich natural orange-gold color on both the obverse and the reverse. This is an early die state with no cracks and, as a result, the detail is amazing on both sides with especially crisp definition at the centers. A few tiny scuffs can be seen with a 5x glass in the fields but these hardly detract from the overall eye appeal of this exceptional coin.

No PCGS MS63 1841-D half eagle has been offered at auction since 1999. An NGC M63 with CAC approval realized $27,600 as HA 6/11: 4626 and, in my opinion, it couldn’t hold a candle to the current coin.

If you are looking for a truly impressive Dahlonega half eagle for type purposes or to spiff up your date set, this coin deserves strong consideration.

CAC has approved two in MS63 and none finer.
