72 Proofs were struck; under 30 are known today with most in the PR63 to PR64 range.

Proof 1886 half eagles are very rare and for some unknown reasons they are exceptionally rare with full contrast. In fact, the present example is one of only three 1886 half eagles to have been designated by PCGS as having Deep Cameo contrast.

This borderline Gem has the naked-eye appearance of a PR65 to PR66 and it is held back from a higher grade solely by the presence of a few wispy hairlines in the left obverse field. The contrast is very strong and the stark black and white appearance is more pronounced than on any 1886 half eagle that I have ever seen.

There are no auction records for a DCAM example of this date. A PCGS PR65CAM sold for $57,281 as Stacks Bowers 3/14: 4086.

A remarkable piece of Proof gold for the sophisticated collector.

CAC has approved one DCAM in this grade with one finer.
