As with most of the New Orleans half dollars from the 1840′s, the 1847-O is a condition rarity whose availability in Uncirculated belies its high original mintage figure. It is not often seen in MS62 to MS63 and it is rare in MS64 and above.

This nicely toned example shows lovely apple-green and reddish-gold coloration on the obverse; the reverse is a natural medium silvery-grey. Both sides are lustrous and the strike is extremely sharp. Some small, well-concealed marks in the right obverse field preclude a higher grade.

Only one PCGS MS62 1847-O half dollar has been auctioned since 1999 and it just brought $2,233 as HA 6/15: 4510. This coin was white and not CAC approved.

In my opinion, few series are more undervalued than the No Motto half dollars from New Orleans.

CAC has approved one in this grade with eight finer.
