Variety 3.

The 1839-C is popular as being the more obtainable of the two Classic Head quarter eagles struck at the Charlotte mint. The 1839-C is about three times more available than its counterpart the 1838-C but it is surprisingly hard to find in collector grades with original color and choice surfaces.

This is perhaps the most cosmetically appealing EF 1839-C quarter eagles I have seen. It is well detailed and original with gorgeous deep natural reddish-gold color which is deepest at the upper reverse. The surfaces are very clean and what appears to be a mark on the cheek of Liberty is a shallow mint-made defect which is seen on many 1839-C quarter eagles.

While there are numerous auction records for schlocky AU50 to AU55 examples, only two PCGS EF40s have sold at auction since the summer of 2011; the last brought $4,888 as HA 7/12: 4698.

To my eyes, this is a much superior coin to nearly all the 1839-C quarter eagles I see in AU50 and AU53 holders and the combination of originality, PCGS holder and CAC approval makes this pretty much The Coin for collectors seeking an affordable Mintmarked issue of this popular type.

CAC has approved two in this grade with eight finer.
