Amongst the various Carson City quarters issued from 1870 through 1878, only two issues–the 1876-CC and the 1877-CC–are seen with any degree of regularity in the higher Uncirculated grades. And neither is easy to locate in MS65 and above.

This wonderfully toned Gem shows similar lilac-gold centers framed by greens and blues at the borders on both sides. The strike is as sharp as one can hope for on a Carson City quarter and the surfaces shimmer with frosty luster below the aforementioned natural coloration.

A coin of similar quality and appearance, graded MS66 by PCGS, sold for $4,113 as Heritage 10/14: 4719. The finest known, a PCGS/CAC MS67 in an old holder, brought a remarkable $38,188 as Gardner I: 30395.
