CONDITIONALLY RARE 1870-S HALF EAGLE

While 17,000 were struck, the 1870-S half eagle is a scarce date in all grades with fewer than 100 are known. I am not aware of a single piece which grades Uncirculated and the best I know of is a PCGS AU58 which sold for $12,925 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 3919.

This fresh-to-the-market example is among the finest 1870-S half eagles. Both sides show natural light to medium orange-gold color and are lustrous. The obverse shows some contact marks in the left field and there is a natural shallow planchet flaw just above the final star; the reverse is very choice and grades at least AU58--if not finer--on its own.

Only two PCGS AU55 1870-S half eagles have sold at auction since the middle of 2006 and the most recent APR is $7,696 for Heritage 2014 FUN: 6723.

This date is essentially unavailable finer than this. An important San Francisco half eagle for the advanced collector.
