RARE PCGS/CAC AU50 1864 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1864 is the third scarcest Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia after the 1862 and the 1863. It is scarce in properly graded AU and most of the coins I see in the AU50 to AU55 range are not choice.

This example is choice and I could see it in an AU53 holder. It is uncleaned with deep natural russet and orange-gold colors contrasted by dark smudges on the high spots. There are a few scattered marks on the obverse which limit the grade while the reverse is a full AU55 on its own.

Two PCGS AU50 1864 double eagles have sold at auction since the beginning on the year. This exact coin sold cheaply in April (see below) while a non-CAC piece brought $8,343.

This is the best available quality for this date at less than $10,000.

Ex Heritage 4/17: 5548 where it sold for $7,638.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 27 finer.
