1853 DOUBLE EAGLE, OGH/CAC

Housed in an old green label holder and, in my opinion, a full AU50 by today's standards.

The 1853 is less available than the 1851 and 1852 double eagles and it is not an easy issue to locate with natural color and choice surfaces.

This orange-gold example has excellent deep natural color over surfaces which are surprisingly lustrous and which show scattered, shallow abrasions.

A very similar 1853 double eagle graded EF40 and housed in an old green label holder (with a serial number only a few coins away) sold for $2,820 as Heritage 4/15: 8531.

A neat coin with all the bells and whistles which appeal to many sophisticated collectors.

CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 166 finer.
