CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU53 1840-C QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1840-C is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Liberty Head half eagle from the Charlotte mint. There were 12,822 struck and fewer than 200 exist today with most in the VF-EF range. About Uncirculated pieces are more available than for the 1841-C or 1842-C but most are poorly struck and have been scrubbed.

This piece is notable for its originality and both sides show rich russet color; the reverse has ample dirt caked into the feathers. There is enough luster and detail to suggest a 55 grade and the only reason this coin was not graded as such is likely a small circular mint-made void seen on the cheek of Liberty.

The last PCGS/CAC AU53 1840-C quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $4,641 as Stacks Bowers 5/13: 2385. Only two PCGS AU53 examples, in total, have crossed the block since July 2009.

This piece would fit nicely into a high quality set of Charlotte Liberty Head quarter eagles.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 6 finer.
