CHOICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU53 1807 QUARTER EAGLE

BD-1, R-3.

The Capped Bust Right quarter eagle design was struck from 1796 through 1807. A total of 18,524 With Stars coins were struck of which over one-third of these (6,812 to be exact) were dated 1807. This makes the final-year-of-issue a logical type coin and even though this is a comparatively available issue with some 250 or so known in total, affordable examples with original skin and warm natural color have become very difficult to locate.

This fresh-to-the-market example is uncleaned and original with deep, even green-gold color in similar hues and proportions on both sides. The strike is slightly better than average for the issue with good detail seen at the central obverse; the reverse center is slightly weak most notably on the star behind the eagle's head. There is remaining luster and the surfaces are very clean. A curvy line between star seven and the L in LIBERTY is mint-made and a few diagonal adjustment marks on the lower portion of the shield are very faint.

The only other PCGS/CAC AU53 example of this date to sell at auction brought $18,800 as Heritage 2016 FUN: 5534. No PCGS AU55 with CAC approval has sold since August 2010.

It is extremely difficult to find a PCGS/CAC Capped Bust Right for less than $20,000 and it is even harder to find one which is obviously untampered-with.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 20 finer.
