SCARCE AND POPULAR 1925-S DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED MS63 BY PCGS

While more than 3.7 million 1925-Sdouble eagles were produced nearly the entire mintage went unreleased and was melted, leaving this issue with an estimated surviving population of fewer than 1,000 pieces. Uncirculated pieces are usually seen in the MS60 to MS63 range and this date is rare in MS64 and very rare in MS65 and finer.

This is a very pleasing coin for the grade with a nice, sharp strike and excellent luster on both sides. The yellow-gold color shades to lime and rose at the borders and the surfaces are much cleaner than usual for the grade.

The last three auction results for non-CAC PCGS MS63 examples of the 1925-S are $14,100 (4/17), $11,163 (1/17) and $12,338 (7/16).

In MS64, the price of this date jumps in the high 30's for a decent PCGS coin, making a nice MS63 such as the current offering a sensible purchase for most collectors.
