CHOICE AU58 1860-D HALF EAGLE, PCGS/CAC

Medium D, Variety 45-JJ.

The 1860-D is one of the two final half eagles from this mint and given the rarity of the 1861-D, it is the final obtainable issue for most collectors. This date is actually a bit overrated in AU grades but properly graded AU58's are rare and almost never show natural color and unimpaired surfaces.

This very choice example has the naked-eye appearance of an MS61 to MS62 and there is minimal wear seen on the surfaces. Both sides are lustrous and show nice natural green-gold and orange hues which is the "right" appearance for this issue. Under a glass, there are a few tiny ticks on the face but you would have to search long and hard to find another AU58 with this degree of eye appeal.

Only two PCGS AU58 1860-D half eagles have sold at auction since late 2010 and neither was approved by CAC; they realized $5,405 (in 2015) and $5,875 (in 2013).

A slightly finer lower grade Uncirculated 1860-D would cost close to double the amount of this coin and it would likely not be as cosmetic.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 4 finer.
