RARE 1877 THREE DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC AU55

The business strike mintage figure for this date is a low 1,468 and the 1877 is one of the rarest Philadelphia issues in this series. Examples were not saved as they were for the low mintage issues in the 1880's and the 1877 is a really scarce date in the higher AU grades, especially with good eye appeal.

Housed in an older pre-barcode label holder, this coin is far better than average for the date and grade with little actual wear seen on the semi-prooflike surface. Both the obverse and the reverse show nice medium yellow-gold color with some reddish tinges seen at the obverse border.

Besides this coin, the only CAC approved AU55 1877 Three Dollar to sell was an NGC coin that sold for $15,294 back in 2012.

With finer examples nearly impossible to locate, this really nice AU55 represents the best available quality for the date.

CAC has approved four in AU55 with five finer.

Ex Legend Auctions 1/17: 271 where it realized $14,100.
