ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1857-O QUARTER EAGLES

This is a numismatically significant as it is the final quarter eagle from the New Orleans mint. Due to a small hoard of high grade pieces, this is actually one of the more available New Orleans quarter eagles in Uncirculated with as many as 15-20 known, mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range. The 1857-O quarter eagle is very rare in MS63 and I am aware of a single MS64 (graded by NGC) which realized $19,550 when sold in the 2007 FUN auction.

This is a vibrant and exceedingly frosty coin with glowing natural yellow-gold color. It is limited in grade by the presence of some scuffs in the fields but this piece has a really dynamic appearance on account of its razor sharp detail and unimprovable luster.

Only two PCGS MS63 1857-O quarter eagles have ever sold at auction and the last of these was offered in August 2010. In July 2012, Heritage sold an NGC MS63 for $16,100 and this coin had a conspicuous spot in the right obverse field.

I can't recall having handled a finer 1857-O quarter eagle than this. An impressive and important coin destined for a world-class set of Liberty Head quarter eagles.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS63 with none finer.
