SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1869 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1869 double eagle is not often seen above the AU55 to AU58 range and most are not choice due to overzealous brightening and heavy abrasions.

This very choice piece is likely from Europe but it is not as "smudgy" as most from this source. There is very little actual wear and the surfaces are very clean with no deep, detracting abrasions save for a shallow reeding mark just past the outside of star four.

The last PCGS AU55 1869 double eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which brought $4,015 as Great Collections 6/13: 118829. A CAC approved NGC AU55 sold for $4,113 as Heritage 11/13: 4737.

If available, a PCGS/CAC would likely cost nearly twice as much as this nice AU55 and likely wouldn't be significantly nicer.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 11 finer.
