SCARCE AND POPULAR COLLECTOR GRADE 1868 $20 WITH CAC APPROVAL

By a large margin, the 1868 is the scarcest Type Two Liberty head double eagle from the Philadelphia mint. It is an extremely difficult issue to locate in the EF and lower AU grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

This example is almost certainly from Europe as it has a distinct deep russet overtone with contrasting darker highlights. There is considerable luster seen on both sides and the abrasions are consistent with the assigned grade. For the date, the eye appeal is far above-average.

An NGC EF45 1868 double eagle with CAC approval brought $3,543 as Stacks Bowers 1/13: 12673.

This coin is far and away the best available quality for this scarce and popular date at under $4,000.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 16 finer.
