CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS AU55 1853-O DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1853-O is a scarcer issue than the 1850-O through 1852-O double eagles and it becomes really difficult to locate in properly graded AU55, legitimately rare in AU58 and extremely rare (and expensive) in Uncirculated. Most of the pieces I have seen in AU55 holders are bright from recent processing and lack any character.

This is a very solid example for the grade with excellent detail and uncommonly unabraded surfaces beneath medium orange and green-gold hues. This date saw extensive commercial use in the South and as a result, most 1853-O double eagles are completely riddled with marks. This is a most welcome exception.

Since late 2014, only one 1853-O double eagle in PCGS AU55 has sold at auction and it realized $17,038 as Heritage 4/17: 4308. An NGC AU55 brought $15,275 as Heritage 4/17: 4309.

For all but a handful of collectors, anything graded higher than AU55 for this date might be considered overkill and it should be pointed out that many 1853-O double eagles in AU55 holders fall far short of the current offering in all respects.
