AN EXCEPTIONAL PCGS/CAC PROOF 1884 EAGLE

A total of 45 Proof 1884 Liberty Head Eagles were produced. For some reason, the survival rate for this year is low and it is likely that as few as 13-16 pieces are known, mostly in the PR63 to PR64 range. I am aware of only one Gem Proof 1884 Eagle (graded PR65DCAM by PCGS) which sold for $69,000 in the Heritage 2012 FUN auction.

This borderline Gem has remarkable eye appeal and it shows stark two-tone contrast between the heavily frosted devices and the deep, watery fields. Both sides show natural lemon-gold color and the eye appeal is exceptional. A few very light lines in the left obverse field--which can only be seen when the coin is tilted into a light source--are all that hold this piece back from a full PR65DCAM grade.

In their January 2014 auction, Goldberg sold a PCGS PR64DCAM with CAC approval (not this coin) for $44,650.

This would be an ideal coin for the type collector looking for a single high-quality Proof With Motto Liberty Head eagle who has the foresight to select a really rare date instead of a less interesting issue from the 1900-1907 era.

CAC has approved 3 in PR64DCAM (including this single PR64+DCAM) with just 1 finer.
