RARE AND POPULAR 1870-CC EAGLE

Variety 1-B.

The 1870-CC is the rarest Carson City eagle and it is the second rarest gold coin from this facility, trailing only the similarly-dated double eagle. There are around 50-60 1870-CC eagles known from a mintage of just 5,908 and this date is desirable in any grade with a number of different types of collectors interested in this rarity.

This coin has lots of honest wear (don't you wish you knew its full history...?)  but it shows full rims, has a sharp date and LIBERTY and is generally pleasing with even natural olive-gold color. There are some marks seen on both sides as one would expect from a coin graded VG8 with a few old scratches in the left obverse field.

Three are known in this grade: a low-end piece that sold for $13,225 in 2008, this coin (see below for its pedigree) and an OGH example that realized $32,900 in 2016.

If you have ever wanted to acquire an "affordable" 1870-CC eagle your chances are highly limited.

Ex Heritage 2015 ANA: 4419 where it realized $28,200.
