VERY RARE GEM PROOF 1866 GOLD DOLLAR

Just 30 Proof gold dollars were made in 1866 and given the typical survival rate for this denomination/era, it is likely that around 15-18 are known. Very few Proof 1866 gold dollars exist in Gem and even fewer are seen with enough contrast to designate as Deep Cameo/Ultra Cameo. The best I have seen are a pair of NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo pieces.

This example appears to be fresh-to-the-market and no finer Proof 1866 gold dollar has appeared for sale in many years. It hasn't been dipped or conserved and it shows pleasing natural liquid orange-gold color over watery, reflective fields. The contrast is excellent with almost enough of a "black and white" appearance to qualify as an Ultra Cameo. There are a few ultra-fine lines in the right obverse field and a small curly lintmark in the central left obverse field which is as made.

The last PR66 1866 gold dollar to sell at auction was a PCGS coin designated as a Deep Cameo that realized $25,300 as Heritage 7/12: 4687. An NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo brought $35,250 as Heritage 2013 FUN: 5791.

You can get a fair amount of bang for your buck in small denomination Proof gold and this lovely 1866 gold dollar seems like a lot of coin for the money.
