Variety 1-A.

This numismatically significant issue is the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from this mint and it is one of the rarest issues of any denomination made in Dahlonega. I rate it as the third rarest D mint quarter eagle (after the 1856-D and the 1855-D) and the second rarest in high grades. There are likely not more than three or four known in Uncirculated of which the finest, graded MS62 by NGC, last sold for $74,750 in April, 2006 as part of the Duke’s Creek Collection.

This fresh-to-the-market example has never before been offered to collectors. Its bright yellow-gold surfaces are lustrous and slightly reflective with an absence of appreciable marks. Despite numerous die cracks, especially on the reverse, the strike is very sharp with nearly full details seen at the centers. Unlike most coins graded MS60, this piece appears to be free of wear and has good overall eye appeal for the date.

No MS60 example of this date has ever sold at auction. An NGC MS61 realized $31,500 back in August 2007 in a Superior auction.

This is an extremely important coin for the advanced Dahlonega quarter eagle specialist.
