The 1853/2 is the only verified overdate in the Liberty Head eagle series. It is fairly easy to find in EF45 to AU53 grades but it is scarce in AU55 and rare in AU58.

Most examples of this variety are very heavily abraded and this piece does show some marks but fewer than most, The surfaces are very lustrous with light wear and there is some natural coloration forming below the date including a small toning spot at the right foot of the 1. There is not much wear visible and the eye appeal is clearly better than average for the date and grade.

The last PCGS AU55 example of the 1853/2 $10 to sell at auction was Heritage 4/09: 3836 (in an old green holder) which brought $5,175. An NGC AU55 with CAC approval sold for $3,173 in the Heritage 10/12 auction.

This is a numismatically significant issue which is not often seen in grades higher than this.

CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
