The 1853/2 is numismatically significant as the only universally recognized overdate in the Liberty Head eagle series. The example offered here clearly show the base of the 2 within the lower loop of the 3 and an undercut of the 2 below this digit. The 1853/2 is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is very rare in full Mint State with just three or four known to me.

This fully lustrous slider is among the finest 1853/2 eagles which I have owned. It shows just the slightest trace of friction on the high spots with lightly abraded surfaces and pleasing natural medium orange-gold color. The strike is sharp with strong detail at the centers and the eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.

The last certified AU58 example with CAC approval to sell at auction was a PCGS slabbed coin offered as Heritage 1/12: 6476 that realized $6,325. Six auction records for AU58′s have been recorded in the last six years with the highest of these being $7,475 in 2011.

If available, an MS61 example with CAC approval would likely bring close to $20,000. At less than a third of the price, this pleasing slider seems like great value to me.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
