The 1853/2 is numismatically significant as the only accepted overdate in the entire Liberty Head eagle series. This is a fairly early die state with a curve of the underlying 2 beneath the middle of the 3; it can be plainly seen with light magnification. This variety is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with just three or so known and none finer than MS61.

This lustrous slider shows very light friction on the obverse while the reverse is a full MS60 or better. The color is a pleasing light yellow-gold with a splash of rose around the date. A few small handling marks can be seen in the fields and this is typical for the date.

A PCGS/CAC AU58 example of this variety sold for $6,325 in Heritage’s 1/12 auction. I was offered an PCGS MS60, non-CAC, for $12,500 at the recent Long Beach show by a knowledgeable wholesaler.

As the popularity of this series continues to grow, there are few truly undervalued issues remaining but this appears to be one of them.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
