In grades up to AU55, the 1853-O eagle is available with little effort. AU58′s are scarce and Uncirculated pieces are extremely rare with probably no more than a half dozen or so properly graded pieces accounted for. This includes an NGC “Specimen” 61 which sold for an astounding $316,250 as Stack’s 8/10: 1109.

This coin is likely from the Johnson, Tennessee hoard which was found in the mid 1980′s and which contained a number of important southern gold coins from the 1840′s and early 1850′s. I grade it “MS62+ net MS60″ as it has full, frosty luster and wonderful natural orange-gold color but there are some scrapes and scratches in the fields which are almost certainly from the excavation process (the coins were buried in the ground and were salvaged by workers at the site). Despite these, the appearance is still exceptional with the best luster I have ever seen on this date and a total absence of wear. A small rectangular mint-made planchet defect on the reverse is located behind the eagle’s neck and this doesn’t detract.

Heritage 11/14: 4016, graded MS61 by NGC and not choice in my opinion, sold for $16,450.

This is a Condition Census example and an important coin for the advanced collector of No Motto New Orleans eagles.
