The 1853-O eagle is common in grades up to an including AU50 but it is scarce in the middle AU grades and quite rare in properly graded AU58. It is exceedingly rare in full Uncirculated with just two or three known. The finest is a PCGS MS61 that brought $18,400 in the Bass II sale back in 1999.

This very lustrous example shows little in the way of wear but does have some luster breaks in the fields from handling. The protected areas show some mirror-like reflection and both the obverse and reverse are a light green-gold in hue. The fields lack the deep, problematical marks so common to this issue. After years of neglect, higher grade examples of the 1853-O eagle are becoming recognized for the rarities that they are.

There has never been a PCGS AU58 with CAC approval sold at auction. The last non-CAC PCGS AU58 was Stack’s 8/10: 1110 which sold for $6,900. The current auction record for this date in PCGS AU58 is $8,050, set by Heritage 1/09: 5529.

This is an important coin for the advanced New Orleans eagle specialist.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
