NICE UNCIRCULATED 1852 EAGLE

All No Motto eagles, regardless of date, are scarce in properly graded Uncirculated. While the number of 1852 eagles graded in MS60 to MS62 by PCGS and NGC is relatively high (even throwing out the resubmissions) the number which truly are “new” is small indeed. There are likely no more than 15-20 1852 eagles in Uncirculated and the number which are “CAC-worthy” is likely fewer than half this amount.

This is a really attractive and really fresh example of this conditionally scarce date. It has fully frosty surfaces which show lovely natural russet and orange-gold color. The strike is mostly sharp and this piece would very likely have graded MS62 were it not for a few scuffs in the obverse fields. The overall appearance screams originality and I have seen inferior No Motto eagles of various dates in MS62 holders.

An NGC MS61 1852 eagle with CAC approval sold for $4,847 as Heritage 1/13: 7322.

If it were available, a PCGS MS62 example with CAC approval would sell for close to double the price of this MS61 and would likely not be much nicer. An important type coin for the savvy collector.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with two finer (both MS62).
