The 1852-O is tied for the fifth rarest of 21 No Motto eagles from this mint and it is the sixth rarest in high grades. A total of 18,000 were struck of which 100-125 are known today. This date is seen most often in VF and EF grades and it is rare in AU with less than two dozen known. It is exceedingly rare in Uncirculated with no more than two or three accounted for and none are finer than MS61.

This slightly prooflike example is struck in green-gold and shows nice medium-hued color with some reddish color at the inner obverse. The strike is typical for the date with some slight weakness at the borders but strong centers. What is really exceptional about this coin is its near-total lack of field abrasions. Other than one vertical bagmark on Liberty’s jawline, the surfaces are virtually unblemished. This date is seldom found with mint luster and most of the AU examples that I have seen have been heavily abraded.

There have been three auction appearances for this date in AU55 in the last two years. In October 2011, a PCGS AU55 brought a very strong $10,350 and in August 2010, another PCGS AU55 was bid up to $8,913.
