The 1850-O is the ninth rarest of 21 No Motto eagles from New Orleans in higher grades. There are over 200 known with most in the VF-EF range. Properly graded About Uncirculated pieces are scarce and this date becomes rare in AU55 to AU58. There are only three known in Uncirculated: a PCGS MS60, a recently-discovered coin graded MS64 and an amazing PCGS MS65+, ex Eliasberg: 686, which was more recently owned by Bob Simpson and then sold to a California collector in 2015.

This fresh-to-the-market example traces its origins to Europe and after decades of laying undisturbed in bank vault, it was recently repatriated to the American market. It has very deep natural green-gold color which is unusual for a date that is often seen bright and unnatural in appearance. The strike is typical for the date with some flatness at the obverse border and the centers but this does not detract. Nor do a few light scuffs in the fields. The eye appeal is far above average for the date and this is one of the two or three finest 1850-O eagles I have handled.

The last NGC AU58 to sell at auction was a dipped, non-CAC piece which still brought a respectable $6,169 as Heritage 11/14: 4013. A PCGS AU58 with CAC approval realized $12,650 as Heritage 10/10: 4877 while a choice PCGS AU58+ with CAC approval brought a strong $18,800 as Heritage 8/14: 5666.

This is the best available quality for this date at under $10,000 and it represents a truly premium quality example of an issue which is genuinely rare in this high of a grade.

CAC has approved four in this grade with two finer (64 and 65).
