The 1849-O is the second rarest New Orleans eagle from the 1840′s, after the 1841-O. There are around 100 known with most grading EF45 and lower. Properly graded AU50 examples are very scarce and this date is seldom found above AU53 and almost never with natural color.

This solid-for-the-grade example shows light green-gold color with some darker hues around the stars and lettering. The strike is typical for the date with some flatness at the centers and no radial lines within the stars; the surfaces show scattered ticks with the only ones of note located between stars two and three.

No PCGS AU50 examples have sold at auction since ANR 7/05: 302 which realized $5,463. An NGC AU50 brought $3,881 as Heritage 5/12: 5121 and a nice NGC AU53 sold for $5,005 in Great Collections’ 6/13 auction.

The last 1849-O eagle I sold, graded EF40 by PCGS, was the object of considerable collector interest. This nicer piece should generate a good deal of “buzz” as well.
