The 1849-O is the fourth rarest No Motto eagle from this mint, trailing the 1859-O, 1841-O and 1857-O. While 23,900 were struck, the survival rate is lower than for other issues of this era and around 100-125 exist with most in the VF-EF range. Properly graded AU examples are quite rare especially with original color and surfaces.

This is among the more original 1849-O eagles which I have seen. It shows lovely green-gold color with russet highlights which are a bit deeper on the obverse than the reverse. The strike is typical for the date with flatness seen on the radial lines of the stars and a slightly concave appearance on the obverse. The surfaces lack the usual deep, detracting marks with just a few shallow ticks behind the eagle’s head visible to the naked eye.

The last AU53 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece graded by NGC which brought $6,463 as Stacks Bowers 4/13: 1354. Heritage sold a nice PCGS AU53, with a detracting mark on the throat of Liberty, for $7,638 as Lot 6026 in their October 2012 sale.

This is a great, eye-appealing example of a very scarce issue.

CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer.
