Only 23,900 examples of this date were struck. The 1849-O is tied for fourth rarest of 21 No Moto eagles from this mint with as few as 100 or so known. It is usually seen well worn and it is a scarce coin in AU50 and quite rare in AU55 and finer.

This is one of the few 1849-O eagles known with deep, natural color. Both the obverse and reverse show rich green-gold color with some traces of dirt in the protected areas. The strike is actually well above average for the issue in spite of weakness on the radial lines of the stars; the centers are uncommonly well defined with full hair and feathers. Some light, scattered marks can be seen on both sides and these are well masked by the depth of the coloration. For the date, this coin has remarkable overall eye appeal.

The last AU50 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC NGC coin which brought $3,881 as Heritage 5/12: 5121. Non-CAC PCGS AU53′s have brought between $7,188 and $8,625 in the last few years.

I can’t recall having owned more than a handful of finer 1849-O eagles in the last few years and certainly very few with the natural appearance shown by this very attractive piece.

CAC has approved just this one coin in AU50 as well as two finer.
