While not as rare as the 1844-1846 Philadelphia trio, the 1848 is much scarcer than the 1847 and the 1849-1853 issues from this mint. It is typically seen in circulated grades and I doubt if more than a dozen properly graded Uncirculated pieces exist. The finest known are a pair of PCGS MS64 coins.

This example was recently found in Europe and it has a remarkably fresh appearance without the typical “Euro” appearance seen on coins from this source. Both sides are frosty and covered with very attractive rich natural caramel-gold color. The strike is sharp with even the centers boldly defined and the fields lack all but the smallest handling marks, which is highly atypical for the issue.

No PCGS MS61 1848 eagles have ever sold at auction. A total of four NGC MS61 APR’s exist since 2006. An inferior PCGS MS61 is currently listed for sale on another dealer’s website at $7,500.

This would make an ideal type coin for the collector seeking a single high grade No Motto Liberty Head eagle.
