Normal Date variety.

The 1846-O is among the scarcer New Orleans eagle produced during the 1840′s. It is most often seen in very low grades and evenly properly graded AU50 pieces are not often seen. It is harder to find than the so-called 1846/5-O overdate, especially in AU and above.

This lustrous example has the detail and “meat” of an AU53 to AU55.  It shows medium orange-gold and greenish colors atop surfaces which are far less abraded than normal for the date and variety. A few stray marks can be seen in the right obverse field and on the reverse above the eagle’s head.

Remarkably, the last PCGS AU50 example of an 1846-O eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 4/01: 7828 which realized $2,760 well over a decade ago.

This is a pleasing and affordable example of an issue which I regard as quite undervalued.
