Variety 2. The Normal Date with the mintmark positioned to the left. The 1846-O is seen with two major varieties: the Normal Date and to the so-called “overdate” (which is not an overdate and which should be de-listed by PCGS and NGC). Taken as a whole, the 1846-O eagle is an extremely scarce coin in AU55 and finer, especially with natural color and surfaces. The NGC and PCGS population figures for this issue are clearly inflated and I can not recall more than a handful of pieces that grade AU55 to AU58 which had natural color.

This is a superb, original coin with deep, even green-gold hues on the obverse and the reverse. It is well struck and from an early die state with none of the weakness from lapping that is a characteristic of Variety 1. Other than a few stray, shallow ticks in the fields, the surfaces are far above average for the date and grade.

Recent auction records for this date are not plentiful and the last AU55 1846-O Normal Date eagle that I can find a record for is Superior 5/08: 108. In January 2010, Heritage sold an NGC AU55 example of the 1846/”5″-O as Lot 4016 for $6,325.

An exciting, fresh-to-the-market example of this rare No Motto Liberty Head issue.
