The three Philadelphia eagles struck between 1844 and 1846 are rare and undervalued. The 1844 is far and away the rarest of the three followed by the 1846 and 1845 which are close rivals. There are an estimated 100-125 1846 eagles known, mostly in the VF-EF range. Properly graded Choice AU’s are really scarce and this date appears to be unique in Uncirculated.

This slightly prooflike example has typically abraded surfaces but the marks which are present are not deep or detracting; an unusual situation for an issue which is nearly always found with very heavy marks. In addition, this coin has nice color with medium green-gold surrounded by flashes of fiery orange-gold at the borders. The strike is sharp and the overall level of eye appeal is way above average for the date and grade.

The last NGC AU55 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which sold for $5,581 as Heritage 2/14: 4735. A nicer non-CAC NGC AU55 brought a robust $8,225 as Heritage 1/14: 6846.

This piece is not far from being Condition Census quality for the date and it is the highest grade 1846 eagle which has been approved by CAC.

CAC has approved one in the grade with none better.
