The 1845 is a scarce, undervalued issue which is a bit less rare than its counterpart the 1846. It is seen far less often than the 1845-O and it is extremely hard to find with original color and choice surfaces.

This is a very conservatively graded coin which I think could be in an AU53 or possibly even an AU55 holder. It shows splendid deep green-gold and orange color with tons of dirt caked onto the obverse and reverse. The chances are good that this piece was located in Europe and repatriated but it doesn’t have the smudgy “Euro look” seen on many coins from this source(s).

There have been no PCGS AU50 1845 eagles sold at auction since Heritage 2/07: 4718 which brought $1,955. I like the present example more than the CAC approved NGC AU55 that brought $4,994 as Heritage 4/13: 5878.

If you like truly dirty gold and you fancy undervalued issues, this 1845 eagle should be in your collection!

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (AU55 and AU58). Ex RYK collection.
