VP-001; 1843/1843. Designated by NGC.

As with the other dates from the early years in this decade, the 1843 is fairly common below AU55 but it becomes rare in AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated. I have never owned an Uncirculated 1843 eagle and have not even seen one since 2003 when a PCGS 61 sold for $15,525 in a Superior auction.

This fresh-to-the-market example has the deepest, most natural color I can recall having seen on this date with rich orange-gold and russet hues covering lightly worn but lustrous surfaces. What I refer to as “wear” on this coin is really just bag friction and the handling marks on the obverse and reverse suggest this piece was shipped loose to Europe many, many years ago. The strike is sharp and the repunched date is fairly obvious under 5x magnification.

Five NGC AU58 1843 eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2011 and prices have ranged from a low of $4,113 for a really inferior example to a high of $5,875 for a processed piece pedigreed to the SS Republic shipwreck.

For all intents and purposes, this is the best available quality for the date.
