Varieties of 1842 eagles are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The former is at least three times scarcer and there are likely fewer than 100 known, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range. In AU55 to AU58, the Small Date is rare and Uncirculated pieces are very rare with just three or four currently known including a PCGS MS61 which I sold earlier this year.

This fresh-to-the-market example likely never saw circulation but has been graded AU58 due some handling marks and some “bag friction” which was incurred when the coin was shipped overseas. Unlike most 1842 Small Date eagles, this piece has never been cleaned and the color is excellent with splashes of deep orange-gold outlining the devices and underlying green-gold. Both sides are lustrous and the eye appeal is excellent.

The last two NGC AU58 examples of this variety to sell at auction both brought oddly high amounts considering their quality. Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 4372 sold for $7,814 while Heritage 2/14: 4159 was bid up to $8,813.

I have handled just one finer 1842 Small Date eagle in the last few years and I think this wholesome example represents excellent value for the savvy collector.
