The 1842-O is the second eagle struck at the New Orleans mint and it is the earliest affordable date, given the rarity of the 1841-O. The 1842-O is not often seen above EF45 to AU50 and most examples in collector grades have been dipped or processed. Coins with natural color and surfaces are rare.

This piece is wholesome and original with deep green color accented by splashes of rich reddish-gold in the obverse fields. There is enough detail and underlying luster to suggest an AU grade but the depth of the color will always keep it as a 45.

Only four PCGS 1842-O eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2009 and none have been approved by CAC.

A pleasing example for the New Orleans collector who appreciates consummate originality.

CAC has approved four in this grade with six finer.
