The 1842-O is the second eagle struck at the New Orleans mint. It is far scarcer than the 1843-O, 1844-O and 1845-O and it is an extremely challenging issue to locate in AU53 to AU55 and above with natural color and choice surfaces.

This is an exceptional example with deep, natural green-gold color which is absolutely correct for the issue. The detail is sharp save for the curl above Liberty’s ear and the surfaces lack the deep, detracting abrasions seen on most 1842-O eagles.

Only two PCGS AU53 1842-O eagles have sold at auction since 1999 (!). The first, ex Goldberg 6/14: 1889, realized $4,583 while the second, ex Heritage 2015 ANA: 6224, brought $4,230.

This is the finest available quality for the date without spending at least $7,500—if not a lot more.

CAC has approved three in this grade with five finer.
