Varieties of 1842 eagles are known with Small Dates and Large Dates. The latter is about two times more available than the former. In Uncirculated, the Large Date is very rare with an estimated six to eight known including at least one Gem (graded MS65 by PCGS) and another one or two which grade MS64.

This fresh-to-the-market example has never before been offered to collectors and it is the best 1842 Large Date eagle that I have offered for sale. It is original and frosty with wonderful glowing orange-gold color which is absolutely “right” for an early date Philadelphia Liberty Head eagle. There are some scuffs in the fields which limit the grade but the eye appeal suggests an MS62 and this coin wouldn’t look silly in a 62 holder. A few natural reddish-gold toning spots can be seen on both sides and, in my opinion, this enhances the coin’s look.

The last MS61 example of this issue to sell at auction was the Bowers and Merena 5/92: 1524 coin which brought a strong $14,850 in a market which tended to overlook this series. No MS62′s have ever crossed the block.

Here is a very important coin for the advanced Liberty Head eagle specialist or a piece which would make an excellent No Motto type coin.

This is the first and only 1842 Large Date eagle in any Uncirculated to be approved by CAC.
