VERY RARE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED 1841-O EAGLE

The rarest No Motto eagle from New Orleans is the 1859-O. However, the 1841-O is actually a rarer issue in higher grades. There are fewer than 10 known which grade About Uncirculated by my standards and this date remains unknown in Uncirculated; the finest is a PCGS/CAC AU58, ex Eliasberg, which I sold to a New England collector in 2014. It is a coin with multiple levels of demand as it is the first year in which the new Liberty Head eagle was produced and only 2,500 were made.

This is an exceptional coin for the date and the grade with nice natural russet and green-gold color over surfaces which while slightly abraded are far cleaner than normal. There is some luster lurking beneath the toing and this is one of the very few 1841-O eagles I have seen which hasn’t been dipped or brightened. As such, it is extremely rare.

Only one PCGS AU50 1841-O eagle has sold at auction since 2004 and it realized $23,000 as Bowers and Merena 6/07: 2688. A PCGS AU53 sold for $25,850 as Heritage 1/14: 6837 and while lustrous, it had been dipped.

This is an extremely important opportunity for the savvy specialist to obtain one of the few known original examples of this rare date. Years may pass before a comparable piece is made available.

CAC has approved this one in AU50 with two finer (AU55 and AU58).
