Old Green Holder. By today’s standards, I grade this coin AU55.

This is a numismatically significant issue as the first Liberty Head eagle with the modified portrait adapted in 1840. The 1840 is common in VF-EF grades but moderately scarce in the lower AU grades and very scarce in AU55 and above. I have only seen one 1840 eagle that I felt was Uncirculated (ANR 8/06: 1542, graded MS61 by PCGS) and I doubt if more than two or three exist.

This slightly prooflike example has splashes of orange-gold color over typically abraded surfaces. There is still quite a bit of “skin” seen on both sides and the detail is excellent for the issue.

Remarkably, there have been no PCGS AU53 examples of this date sold at auction since February 2000.

The PCGS population of seven in this grade with only 11 finer is a good indication of this date’s scarcity. Despite this, it is reasonably priced.
