The Liberty Head eagle design was revised in 1839 but the 1840 is the first readily available issue for most date collectors. There are an estimated 175-225 examples known, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range. The typical AU 1840 eagle is processed and very unattractive.

This light green-gold example shows extensive areas of deeper russet color on the high spots, likely the result of storage in an overseas vault. The remaining luster and the detail suggest an AU53 to AU55 grade but there are some scattered old marks in the fields which keep the grade at a conservative AU50.

The only PCGS AU50 1840 eagle to sell at auction in recent years brought $1,410 as Heritage 4/13: 5875 and that coin was baggy, bright and had little eye appeal.

There are not many 1840 eagles priced at less than $2,000 which have the character which this piece displays.
