There are as many as 200 1840 eagles known in all grades but most are well circulated and this date is scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58. In Uncirculated, it is very rare with just four or five known and all in the MS60 to MS62 range. The finest I have seen is the sole PCGS MS62, which last sold as Stacks Bowers 6/14: 13242 where it brought $35,250.

This light yellow-gold example is certainly free of wear despite some scuffs in the fields from being shipped loose in a bag during transport. The luster is bold and more full than on any 1840 eagle that I have seen. The strike is razor sharp with both sides as well detailed as can be imagined. The overall eye appeal is excellent and early date P Mint No Motto eagles are seldom found with this sort of look.

Only two MS61 1840 eagles have sold at auction since 2000: this coin (see pedigree below) and a PCGS coin that sold for $19,550 as ANR 8/06: 1542.

An important coin for the advanced collector of Liberty Head eagles.

Ex Heritage 6/15: 4285 where it sold for $15,275
