SCARCE AND POPULAR HIGH GRADE 1839 EAGLE

Head of 1838, Large Letters reverse.

The eagle denomination was resurrected in 1838 after a 34 year hiatus. In 1838 and 1839, the design featured Gobrecht’s first rendition of the Liberty Head with a Large Letters reverse. Later in 1839, this design was modified. The 1839 Head of 38 is moderately scarce in lower grades, scarce in AU50 and rare in AU55 to AU58. In Uncirculated, this issue is extremely challenging, not to mention very expensive.

This lightly worn slider shows a considerable amount of luster on both sides and nice light yellow-gold color. There are some small marks seen in the fields on the obverse and the reverse and the radial lines in the stars are flat as is common for this issue.

Not a single PCGS AU58 example has sold at auction since July 2002 (!). The last three NGC AU58′s realized $10,575, $12,350 and $13,513, respectively.

This is an important coin for the type or date collector and if you collect PCGS graded Liberty Head eagles, it is important to note that nearly fourteen years have passed since the last AU58 has been available to specialists.
